Boundary Road, N22

All our projects start with a review of different options for the layout, and in this case we tested whether we could accommodate a separate utility room, shower room and WC without loosing too much space from the new kitchen extension. This iterative design process looked at the various functional requirements in different configurations. This demonstrated to the client they could achieve more than they anticipated. The layout now offers the potential for multi-generational living, should an elderly parent wish to use the current reception room as a bedroom. If so, there would be an accessible shower room and WC on the ground floor, while still maintaining sufficient social space for the family.

Proposed ground floor plan.

A key part of the client brief was to have a pitched roof and a stepped rear façade, creating a voluminous asymmetric vaulted ceiling and a characterful rear façade. Where the ceiling height is lower on one side of the extension, an array of standard Velux rooflights, utilising Velux’s own rafter system, provided a cost effective alternative to large format structural glazing. The opening Velux units are also great for natural ventilation and easy to clean from the inside.

We were so excited that our client had the confidence and bravery to use a bold palette of colour and materials. Apparently the extension makes for a great party space too!
